The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
J. Oppenheimer Bread and roses
For every woman, destruction and reconstruction are the downbeat and upbeat of every personal and collective existence. In the forward thrust of a life that restarts from an apparently definitive collapse, the urgency of tenacity makes itself felt — the energy of every beginning. And so one moves, rubble after rubble, in search of fragments of the past to combine with new elements of a present time that shifts within the space of possibility; a space in which the body experiments in order to begin again and transfers to another nearby the impulse of one who sets off anew from defeat. From the awareness that an individual reconstruction can become collective, one moves towards the choice to create a space of bridges and communications, of minglings and attempted equilibria, of equivalences and interpenetrations — between void and fullness, between near and distant — a polycentricity composed of the complex wholeness of each person, sustained by that void which grants a margin of choice to sight, to intentions, to desire, and which supports the slow search for communicative tools. One arrives, therefore, at the certainty of being different, yet together in a shared intent in which a community of women who dance — already consolidated — can organise itself and make its voice heard in defence of a proportionate world. And this is what is written on their bodies: “human beings are free seeds that the wind of society must cause to flower, guaranteeing them bread and roses and training them for the currents of life. We are not indifferent to ourselves, and so we recognise the other. By dancing together we overcome fear and judgement, we savour beauty, we nurture the hope that a possible world, a just place, will sooner or later come to be.”
